The sheephead has a species range from southern Baja California, including the Gulf of California and Guadalupe Island, Mexico to Monterey Bay, California. Their habitat is primarily epipelagic kelp forests where they use mucus to deter predators while they sleep. They use large front teeth to pry invertebrates from their substrates, jaws and other teeth to crush the prey, then throat bones to grind the hard shells into digestible pieces.
